• Differentiate between cystitis, pyelonephritis, asymptomatic bacteriuria, and complicated UTI using history, risk factors, and point-of-care testing.
• Apply current antibiotic stewardship principles to select first-line, second-line, and alternative agents based on local resistance patterns (e.g., nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin, pivmecillinam, beta-lactams).
• Interpret urinalysis and urine culture appropriately, including when to test and when to avoid testing (e.g., in asymptomatic elderly or catheterized patients).
• Manage recurrent UTIs using non-antibiotic strategies (cranberry, vaginal estrogen, D-mannose, methenamine hippurate) and antibiotic prophylaxis when indicated.
• Identify red flags and indications for referral or admission, including pregnancy, urological abnormalities, sepsis, and failed outpatient therapy.
• Address special populations: children, older adults, diabetics, pregnant individuals, and immunocompromised patients.
• Utilize updated national and international guidelines (e.g., NICE, IDSA, EAU, AAFP) to guide clinical decision-making.
